Lagoon Depth & Swim Safety
Estimate how deep the water gets as you walk out from the resort beach — useful for kids and confident swimmers alike.
Unique: models the typical Maldives atoll rim profile — 0.5 m at shore → 2–4 m on the flat → 1 m reef edge → 50 m+ drop-off.
What this solves
Maldives resort beaches look uniform, but their bathymetry differs a lot. A 20 m walk out from a "wide shallow flat" resort gives you waist-deep water; from a "near drop-off" resort it can put you 4–6 m deep. Add tide (low tide exposes more reef flat) and you have a quick safety model.
How to read results
- Depth estimate: typical depth at your distance from shore.
- Drop-off proximity: estimated distance to the reef edge (where the bottom drops fast).
- Swim safety: rule of thumb (kids should not be past waist depth without floatation).
Limitations
Resorts have unusual bathymetry — ask the dive center for a specific map. This is a general model, not a depth survey.
FAQ
Where is the deepest lagoon?
Inside lagoon can be 30+ m deep, but most resort beaches are on the rim, not inside.
Is it safe for kids?
The wide-flat lagoon is the safest — but watch for sudden depth changes and don't rely solely on floaties.
