USD ↔ MVR Currency Switcher
The Maldives has two currencies in play: USD at resorts and tourist spots, Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) at local shops and guesthouses.
Unique: tells you which currency is accepted, not just the rate.
What this solves
Resorts price everything in USD (and accept USD or credit card). Local islands use Rufiyaa — some shops accept USD, but you'll often get bad change rates. This tool converts and tells you which currency actually works at your spending location.
How to read results
- Accepted: green border, you'll get a fair rate or better.
- Partially accepted: pay in this currency but expect small change to be given in MVR, or at poor rates.
- Not recommended: pay with the other currency instead.
Limitations
Rates fluctuate. Most banks and money changers in Malé give a 1–2% margin from the official rate. Airport rates are worst.
FAQ
Can I pay USD everywhere?
No. At resorts and tourist operators, yes. At local shops on inhabited islands, often no — they'll politely ask for MVR.
Should I bring cash?
Yes — small USD bills for tips and local shops. Cards are accepted at resorts; cash is needed on local islands and ferries.
