Ciguatera (Reef Fish) Risk
Ciguatera is a toxin that accumulates in large reef fish β especially in apex predators like moray eel, barracuda, and some groupers.
Unique: weights individual species (not just "reef fish") + your vulnerability β pregnancy, liver conditions, and fish size all matter.
What this solves
Ciguatera toxin comes from a microalga and accumulates up the food chain. Large predators (barracuda, moray eel, large grouper) in reef areas are highest risk; pelagic species (tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi) are essentially zero risk. Pregnant travelers and people with liver conditions should be especially careful β the toxin crosses the placenta.
How to read results
- Very low: safe to eat freely.
- Low: small servings OK.
- Medium: avoid if pregnant / liver condition.
- High: avoid entirely.
Limitations
This is a probabilistic model. Ciguatera incidence varies by atoll and season β outbreaks are tracked but not perfectly predictable.
FAQ
Symptoms?
GI upset within hours, then neurological symptoms (cold allodynia β cold feels burning hot) within days. Most cases resolve in weeks but can last months.
Can cooking destroy the toxin?
No. The toxin is heat-stable.
