Alcohol Rule Mapper
Where alcohol is legal, restricted, or outright prohibited in the Maldives.
Unique: clarifies the three-zone system (resort / uninhabited tourist / inhabited local) most travelers confuse.
What this solves
The Maldives splits into three alcohol zones: (1) resort islands (alcohol freely served, the only place you'll find it served legally to tourists); (2) safari boats (alcohol served on board); (3) inhabited local islands (alcohol prohibited, with very rare tourist-lounge exceptions). Hulhumale and Malé are inhabited — so even airport-area hotels are dry.
How to read results
- Green: alcohol freely available.
- Amber: limited or licensed-only.
- Red: prohibited — do not bring, do not drink.
Limitations
A few boutique guesthouses on inhabited islands have a tourist-only lounge with alcohol (e.g., some in Maafushi, Fulidhoo). Ask before booking. These are exceptions, not the rule.
FAQ
What if I just buy in Malé duty-free?
You can buy at the airport duty-free after checking in for your departure flight. Bringing it into the country is restricted, and taking it to a local island can lead to confiscation.
Can a resort guest take alcohol to a local island?
No. The rule applies to the island, not the person. Some resorts allow sealed bottles in luggage for departure-day use only.
